The Behringer 676 is an all-analog, vacuum tube microphone preamplifier and discrete FET-style compressor channel strip designed for tracking lead vocals, bass, acoustic instruments, and electric guitars in project and commercial studios. Inspired by the iconic Universal Audio 6176 architecture, the 676 combines a vintage 610-style tube preamp and 2-band EQ stage with an ultra-fast 1176-style FET limiting amplifier, loaded with premium 12AX7/ECC83S and 12AT7/6072 tubes, four custom-wound Midas transformers, and independent Join/Split routing.

Core Performance Features

  • Classic 610-Style Tube Preamplifier: Employs premium 12AX7 and 12AT7 vacuum tubes combined with custom Midas transformers to deliver harmonic saturation, smooth high-end roll-off, and low-end warmth.

  • Ultra-Fast Discrete FET Limiter: Outfitted with an authentic FET-style limiting amplifier circuit featuring attack times from 20 to 800 microseconds and release times from 50 to 1100 milliseconds, capable of handling everything from transparent vocal leveling to aggressive drum transient crushing.

  • Dedicated Join/Split Routing Architecture: A front-panel Join/Split toggle lets you route the tube preamp directly into the FET compressor internally ("Join"), or treat both sections as completely independent outboard processors via their own rear XLR I/O jacks ("Split").

  • Variable Input Impedance & Tone Shaping: Rotary source selector offers selectable input impedance settings for Mic (500 ohms / 2 kohms) and Hi-Z instrument inputs (47 kohms / 2.2 Mohms), allowing tonal matching for ribbon, dynamic, and condenser microphones or passive bass pickups.

  • 2-Band Shelving Tube Equalizer: Features stepped high and low shelving filters with selectable frequency points (Low: 70 Hz, 100 Hz, 200 Hz; High: 4.5 kHz, 7 kHz, 10 kHz) with boost/cut controls for fast acoustic shaping before dynamics processing.

  • Vintage Analog VU Metering: Front-panel moving-coil VU meter with a 3-way source selector switch allows real-time monitoring of Preamp Output, Compressor Gain Reduction (GR), or Compressor Output.

  • All-Buttons-In "Nuke" Mode: The compressor ratio selector features classic stepped ratios (1:1, 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, 20:1), true bypass, and the famous "All" ratio setting (greater than 100:1) for explosive drum room mic compression.
